The Condor’s Shadow explores the great hope and extreme lengths that biologists, zookeepers, scientists and a feisty condor named Pitahsi bring to the task of pulling the California condor back from the brink of extinction. Obligate scavengers, condors feed upon the remains of animals that die in the wilderness and ranch lands of the American west. In the many instances where animals have been shot with lead-based ammunition, condors and other scavenger birds ingest fragments of lead. Lead toxicity is the number one cause of mortality and the principle driver behind the conservation program dependency of the California condor. The Condor's Shadow explores the lead issue and the passionate work of the people making the comeback of the condor a reality.
